    Value of Latvian export of goods grows 2.2% in four months, imports up 5.8%

    RIGA, June 9 (LETA) - In the first four months of 2026, Latvia exported EUR 6.941 billion worth of goods, up 2.2 percent from the same period a year ago, and imported EUR 8.073 billion worth of goods, up 5.8 percent year-on-year, the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) informed.

    Latvia's foreign trade turnover in the first four months of the year thus came to EUR 15.014 billion, rising by 4.1 percent, or EUR 589.081 million in current prices, compared to January-April 2025.

    In April 2026 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 4.13 billion, and at current prices it was 12.6 percent higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods increased by 13.9 percent and of imported goods by 11.4 percent. In April, Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.94 billion, but imported - in the amount of EUR 2.19 billion.

    Compared with April 2025, foreign trade balance has improved as exports in total foreign trade amount increased from 46.4 percent to 47 percent.

    Whereas, compared to March this year, the exports value went up by 5 percent, but the imports value fell by 2.4 percent.

    Calendar and seasonally adjusted data show that, compared to April 2025, in April 2026 the exports value at current prices went up by 12.9 percent, but the imports value - by 10.5 percent, whereas, compared to the previous month, the exports value went up by 9.1 percent, but the imports value - by 3.4 percent.

    Main changes in exports in April 2026, compared to April 2025 included exports of mineral products up by EUR 157.3 million or 83.5 percent; exports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 35.2 million or 14.5 percent; exports of prepared foodstuffs up by EUR 29 million or 18.5 percent; exports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal up by EUR 16.8 million or 6.6 percent; exports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 13.9 million or 13 percent.

    Main changes in imports in April 2026, compared to April 2025 included imports of mineral products up by EUR 146.5 million or 72.5 percent; imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 47 million or 12.5 percent; imports of prepared foodstuffs up by EUR 16.7 million or 9.6 percent; imports of vegetable products up by EUR 11.8 million or 13.5 percent; imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 7.9 million or 3.8 percent.

    The main exports partners in April were Lithuania (16.7 percent of total exports), Estonia (11 percent), Germany (6.4 percent) and Sweden (5.2 percent), while the main import partners were Lithuania (21.8 percent of total Latvian imports), Germany (11.5 percent), Poland (10.8 percent) and Estonia (8.9 percent).

    Year-on-year exports to the US rose by 56.9 percent and comprised EUR 59.3 million. The upturn was driven primarily by increased exports of mineral products, which rose by EUR 29.4 million. Imports from the United States increased 2 times and was valued at EUR 55.6 million. Also rise in imports was mostly affected by the increase of EUR 30.9 million in imports of mineral products.

    The rise in exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation in April 2026, as compared to April 2025, was mostly facilitated by an increase in exports of motor gasoline by EUR 71.9 million. In turn, drop in exports of dairy produce, birds' eggs, natural honey in April 2026, compared to April 2025, was mostly affected by a decline in exports of unsweetened milk and cream by EUR 7.7 million or 37.4 percent.

    The rise in imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation in April 2026, compared to April 2025, was mostly facilitated by an increase in imports of natural gas and diesel oil by EUR 58.3 million and EUR 47.8 million, respectively. In turn, the decrease in imports of articles of iron or steel was mostly affected by a decline in imports of metal structures and parts thereof of EUR 5.5 million or 34.9 percent.

    In April 2026 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 126 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods, and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 38 partners.
