Downed drone shows that Latvia is capable of responding to drone threats, but efficiency needs to be improved - Rinkevics

RIGA, June 10 (LETA) - The downed drone shows that Latvia is capable of responding to drone threats, but efficiency needs to be improved, President Edgars Rinkevics said at a meeting with Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (United List) at Riga Castle on Wednesday.

As reported, on Monday morning fighter jets from the French NATO Baltic airspace patrol mission shot down a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that had flown into Latvia as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare in Berzgale parish of Rezekne municipality.

Commenting on the situation in Latvia's eastern regions and drone threats, the president expressed his gratitude to the National Armed Forces, NATO, the Defense Ministry and the internal affairs system.

Latvia needs to develop its drone defense capabilities, which is a top priority that all the relevant institutions are currently working on, said Rinkevics. Drone incidents will recur, but response algorithms are currently being improved, he added.

The president also welcomed the agreement on comprehensive defense cooperation signed by Kulbergs and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the Baltic-Nordic Summit in Tallinn.

The agreement will provide a good basis for developing Latvia's air defense capabilities and supporting Ukraine as quickly as possible, said Rinkevics. The agreement provides for specific measures and actions to be taken.
